Career Longevity and Broad Industry Exposure

With more than two decades of corporate experience, Shanaka stands as a veteran in the field of digital technology, consulting, and corporate leadership. His career began in software design and development, but soon expanded to encompass telecommunications, enterprise architecture, software services delivery, and apparel manufacturing. Being fortunate to have worked in amazing Sri Lankan companies such as hSenid Software, MilleniumIT, Dialog Axiata, Virtusa, Ambeon Holdings and Global companies like Oracle and Stretchline Holdings Limited, Shanaka has immersion in different corporate and national cultures leading to the appreciation of diversity. This breadth has equipped him with a unique ability to synthesize technology and industry expertise, continually delivering value in every organization he serves.

National Impact Through ICTA

Beyond his corporate contributions, Shanaka served as a Non-executive Board Member of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka. Here, together with the Chairman and the Board Members, he contributed to build the long-term digital policy and roadmap at a national level. Among his driving ambitions is propelling Sri Lanka toward the realization of a mature, digitally enabled society by the year 2030. This work dovetails public and private action, and Shanaka was actively building partnerships that foster innovation, strengthen public-private collaboration, and engage citizens as participants in the country’s digital evolution.

Educational Credentials and Continuous Learning

Shanaka’s academic foundation is as robust as his professional trajectory. He fondly remembers his school years at St. Peter’s College, Colombo 4 – which provided him with the foundation for the future. He is a graduate of the University of Moratuwa, where he specialized in Computer Science and Engineering. Furthering his expertise, he is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) in the UK, holds a Master of Business Administration from Sheffield University, and is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). His on-campus MBA experience at the Sheffield University UK was what made him immerse himself in the global arena and understand the value of multi-cultural collaboration and during his time in Sheffield he met amazing fellow students from so many countries who after 2 decades remain good friends. This blend of technical, managerial, and project leadership qualifications has equipped him with tools, frameworks, and a passion for lifelong learning.

Throughout his career, Shanaka has established a reputation for leadership that empowers rather than directs. He is known for mentoring teams, encouraging collaboration, and ensuring that every member’s potential is recognized and developed. His focus lies in bringing the best out of people and supporting them with processes, systems, frameworks, methods and technological tools so they can excel. He is a strong advocate of empathy and kindness being the fundamental human qualities to create lasting relationships at work and helping others to understand their own true potential.

Embracing Disability and Driving to make an Impact

Shanaka has a congenital disability in his left arm. With the tremendous love and encouragement from his parents and his sister, who only saw him as “differently abled”, he was able to face the facts and become determined to overcome the hardships and challenges and focus on what he is in control of. Through school life, mixed with an amazing group of friends and the occasional “bully tactics,” he was able to withstand all pressures that came his way and learnt and matured in his “self-awareness,” helping him to focus on the process and the system of achieving his goals. He fondly remembers his teachers in school and his university lecturers, who did not treat him differently but with respect and encouragement to get through his learning experience.

Taking a residential MBA at Sheffield University in the UK, which was a grueling academic experience for a year, he is grateful for the University staff and the friendships he formed with fellow students from India, Mexico, the UK, Africa, China, Japan, and many other nations. They remain his lifelong friends to date,

His career as a professional Engineer and a Management accountant would not have been fulfilling if not for some of his inspiring leaders he was fortunate to have worked with. Being fortunate to have worked for both local and international companies, he is grateful to his amazing wife and his two sons (twins) who have always been there for him during times of success and times of turbulence.

Message to the Differently Abled community

Shanaka would like to take this opportunity to appeal to anyone who is “differently abled” to first “accept” who you are – a UNIQUE human being! Acceptance is the first step to understanding your potential. Find the passion that stirs that inner fire in yourself and work towards curating the process of creating the path to transform the passion into making an impact in society – give purpose to what you do. Success is not measured in material wealth but in the quantum of inner happiness and the lives you touch, to make a lasting impact. Shanaka did not have any special abilities, but an open mind to do something worthwhile and create a lasting impact on others.
